Siemens'total purchases from Taiwan will hit EUR 1.2 billion in
2002, according to Hermann Baumann, chairman of the Siemens advisory
board said during a visit to Taiwan which included a meeting with
the nation's Premier, Yu Shyi-kun.
Siemens, which began operations in Taiwan in 1970 has purchased
US$ 1.2 billion this year ( the US$ is at par with the EURO at the
time of writing ) from Taiwan's electronics suppliers, including
notebook computers, cellphones, motherboards and servers.
The figure represents about 1.5% of Taiwan's total electronics exports.
Baumann also made a commitment to continue to expand procurement,
expecting it to range between US$ 1.45 billion and US$ 1.56 billion
for the next two years.
At this opportunity, Baumann also announced the establishment of
a business center designed to consolidate the position of German
companies in Taiwan within two years.
Siemens is working together with the European Chamber of Commerce
in Taiwan for this trade center, that will provide office space
for German or European companies that would like to venture on the
island. With the project still in the planning stage, Baumann declined
to disclose investment figures, but said the center will also house
Siemens'Taiwan headquarters and the German Institute, Germany's
de facto embassy in Taiwan.
Apart from above mentioned electronic purchases, Siemens is involved
in large infrastructure, power distribution and railroad projects,
including the MRT,
Taiwan's growing subway mass rapid transit system.
