Tatung Co. of Taiwan, one of the prominent exhibitors at CeBIT
Hannover, recently announced that it has won OEM orders for tablet
PCs from several leading international brands. Hsiao Ya-wen, senior
manager of Tatung¡¦s multimedia communication business division told
the press that her company is contractually restricted from disclosing
the names of the customers. Industry insider sources, however, indicated
that Tatung would ship tablet PCs andWindows Powered Smart Displays
devices to ViewSonic of the United States, several web pad models
to NEC of Japan. It also hoples to win orders for tablet PCs and
Windows Powered Smart Displays from NEC.
Hsiao said her company is very confident about the future sales
of the said new products, especially after winning the said big
contract production orders.
She added that Tatung has begun mass production of 10.4-inch Windows
Powered Smart Displays for some ODM customers as it is planning
to roll out a 15-inch model next year.
She added that Tatung currently ships dozens of thousands of webpads
to a Japanese customer and is in intensive talks with two to three
companies over the development of medical, education and retail
management applications for such products.
She explained that the tablet PCS are ideal for portable wirelesss
communication and handwriting identification. Windows Powered Smart
Displays can be used as a wireless telephone and web pads offer
a convenient platform for accessing the Internet.
Tatung is one of the largest electric industrial conglomerates
of Taiwan and has been trying to diversify its business in the past
few years into the communication and multimedia fields.
