Solomon Technology of Taiwan will start volume production of GPRS
modules, which would be the smallest in the world, in the 4th quarter
of this year, the company announced to the press.
According to the manufacturer, this smallest GPRS is best suited
for personal digital assistants (PDAs) and notebook computers and
will cost less than US$ 80 each.
GPRS or "General packet radio services " is a standard
for wireless communications, which runs at speeds of up to 150 kbps,
compared with the current Global Systems for Mobile Communications
(GSM). GPRS, which supports a wide range of bandwidths, is an efficient
use of limited bandwidth and is particularly suited for sending
and receiving small burst of data. Recently, Solomon also formed
at strategic alliance with Motorola's handset solution, i.250 to
manufacure tha world's smalles GPRS module. In order to expand Motorola's
stake in the wireless communications market and stir up up the demand
for the module, Solomon will set a al ow price for this new product.
