Ritek Corp. of Taiwan announced the formal start of operations
of its affiliate, RiTdisplay Corp. Ritek told the local press
that it is aiming to generate sales to makers of portable electronic
devices and portable wireless communications products.
The new company, originally Ritek's organic light-emitting diode
(OLED) research and development department, is expected to be
the world's largest supplier of OLED an polymeric light-emitting
diodes (PLED) displays in 2002, as it begins to operate at full
capacity.
During the opening ceremony for the new plant, RiTdisplay general
manager Wang Ding-chang said the company has developed and produced
OLEDs with stunning speed and taken the initiative of building
the first fully automated mass production facility if this kind.
OLEDs are self-emitting and thus do not require a backlight.
They are extremely thin, lightweight, and use little power, characteristics
which make them suitable for portable electronic products.
RiTdisplay also has technology for PLED display production. These
displays are regarded as brighter than today's small LCDs. They
have richer color and can be viewed from a variety of angles without
backlighting.
Some U.S. and Japanese investors are already rumored to be interesting
in funding the new company for expansion.
