With European handphone manufacturers scaling down own production
more and more, dynamic Taiwan enjoys the impact of these measures.
The Compal Group told the local press that its mobile phone delivery
volume would hit the level of 5 million to 10 million pieces in
2002, a whooping growth from 2001. Sales of GPRS models will reach
50,000 units per month.
Considering overall production costs, some lines will be moved
to China next year by Compaq¡¦s affiliate Compal Communication Corp.,
while the mother company Compal Electronic Inc. itself will continue
the manufacture of mobile phones in Taiwan.
The Compal Group expects to formally deliver its GPRS mobile phones
this months.
In related news, the Compal Group begang delivering its own developed
PDAs in June. The group expects such sales will total about 100,000
units until the end of this year. Executives at Compal said that
PDA sales have grown steadily after Compal Electronics merged with
Palmax Technology Co., another affiliate of the group.
To further strenghten the competitiveness of its PDA and mobile
phone products, the Compal Group will use LTPS (low temperature
Poly-Si) panels from Toppoly Optoelectronics Inc, which is scheduled
to mass manufacture such panles in the fourth quarter of 2002.
