VIA Technologies, Taiwans leading Chipset maker, yesterday announced the establishment of a new department to engage in manufacturing motherboards and information appliances (IAs)

The new department, called VIA platform solutions division (VPSD) will be in charge of designing, developing and selling platform solutions, including a new line of branded VIA motherboards, Pcsand set-top boxes, and servers.

The establishment of the new department is designed to offset negative impact from the company’s legal battle with Intel Corp., said VIA President Chen Wen-chi.

"We have had discussions with our customers and most are very supportive of the move"Chen said, adding that VIA is set to start volume shipments of motherboards later this months.
