According to reports in local media, Mitac Tecchnology received
an OEM order from Sharp to manufacture a next generation notebook
computer with an 14-inc TFT-LCD scrren. The first shipmnt will
go out in August 2001. Mitac will deliver between 30,000 and 40,000
units to Sharp each month until July 2002. If the 14-inch screen
comes off production with no problems, Sharp may order the same
model with a 15-inch screen.
Taiwan makers Mitac and Twinhead are sharp's OEM partners for
notebook computers, deliverying 10,000 per month each. Quanta
partnered with Sharp to establish Quanta Display, and if this
venture should turn out to become a success, it will create the
leverage needed to join Mitac and Twinhead as another one of Sharp's
notebook OEMs.
In 2000, Mitac shipped 579,00 notebooks. In January and February,
the company shipped about 100,000 units and has a very good chance
to reach a total output of one million pieces for 2001.
