Mitac International corporation said Thursday that the firm beat
other local counterparts to obtain LCD desktop PC orders from IBM
recently. Mitac already began delivering to IBM and expects its
revenue will grow considerably in 2001.
In 1999, IBM withdrew from the general retail market for consumer
desktop PCs in the U.S. market. IBM terminated its relationship
with Acer and switched low-end desktop PC orders to an U.S.-based
counterpart.
To cope with the market change, IBM was seeking OEM partners for
the manufacture of sits LCD desktop PCs in Taiwan in the past few
months. Acer, First International Computer Co., Mitac, and Hon Hai
Precision Industry.Co. were reportedly striving for this order.
The Mitac Group consists of Mitac Internation, Getac Corp., and
Synnex Technology International Corp. It estimates to reach a total
revenue of NT$ 180 billion in 2000, up 40% from 1999 ( The exchange
rate presently hovers around 32,8 NT$ for the US$)
