Elan Microelectronics Corp., a Taiwan IC design
firm, announced yesterday that it will invest in two U.S. high-tech
companies to expand it's wireless IA (information apppliance)
business. Elan plans to acquire a 3,2% share in RISE, a U.S.-based
microprocessor producer, for US$ 5 million. The Taiwan company
will use RISE's low-powr X86 microprocessors with it's own embedded
meomory chip to make devices for wireless IA products.
In addition the company will also cooperate with
ARAF TEC, a U.S. telecom company, to set up a firm to tap Taiwan's
telecom market. The joint venture will be capitalized at an estimated
NT$ 60 million ( approx 2 million US$ ).
