Acer Display Technology Inc. and Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd., main local TFT-LCD manufacturers, to set up several factories in Lungtan of Taoyuan County, northern Taiwan.

Acer Display will construct four TFT-LCD factories and a PDP factory on an 18-hectare site in the Aspire Park, with estimated investment of more than NT$100 billion. The first TFT-LCD factory is under construction, with trial run to start by the end of this year and commercial operation scheduled for early 2001.

Chunghwa purchased a 25-hectare land parcel also located in Lungtan to develop a FPD industrial district for its own use with estimated investment of over NT$55 billion. The company will construct three TFT-LCD and two PDP factories there, with entire completion scheduled for 2006.

In addition to the two companies' seven TFT-LCD factories in Lungtan plus Chunghwa's two existing ones, HannStar Display Corp. has a TFT-LCD factory located in Yangmei of Taoyuan County and Quanta Display Inc. has one in Linkou, Taipei County's rural township bordering Taoyuan County. As a result, the Taoyuan-Linkou belt will have the highest concentration of TFT-LCD factories in the world.
