Taipei - - United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), Taiwans second
largest manufacturer of wafer foundry services, will invest between
US$ 2 to 5 billion over the next five years in plant expansion to
meet growing world markte demands, a company spokesman announced
in Taipei.
Executives of the maker forecasted that sub-contracted semiconductor
production on Taiwan will increase by 25% annually till 2010.
UMCs joint venture with Hitachi of Japan will start manufacturing
12 inch wafers at the fledgeling Science-based Industrial Park in
the south Taiwan city of Tainan.
UMC plants will have a capacity of nearly 2.400 million semiconductors
this year, expecting this figure to rise to an annual 3.200 million
in 2001 and 4.000 million in 2002.
