ALi's M5281 and M5283 support data rate of up to 150 MB/s - a standard set forth by Serial ATA Organization (info@serialata.org), which clearly proven to substantially increase the bandwidth for PC performance. Facilitates information transfer to and from the hard disk to improve data bus rate transfer. Additional support for RAID function amongst the M5281 and M5283 calls for significant increase in the hard disk storage capacity as well as performance and data security. Compatible with all software and driver available in today's market, both chipsets supports "hot-plug" feature that allows easy detachment and connection of serial ATA devices without the need to power down the system. The parallel ATA supported feature is recognizably beneficial to end-users that are still on today's widely used ATA-133 format, allowing backward compatibility as well as smooth upgrade to serial ATA technology without having to purchase a brand new system. Serial ATA offers much simpler installation and interface, eliminating the requirements of system configuration and jumper settings.

Compliant with PCI and Card Bus specifications, the M5281 is integrated with two channels of Serial ATA to support two Serial ATA peripheral devices, as well as two additional Parallel ATA channels supporting a total of four Parallel ATA ports. On the other hand, the M5283 (the more compact version of M5281) reserved only one Parallel ATA channel for 2 Parallel ATA port connections.
