MOXA unveils new serial-to-Ethernet solution for device manufacturers and system integrators

Oct. 22, 2001

Moxa Technologies, the No. 1 supplier of serial and serial-to-Ethernet communication products in Asia, is introducing NPort Express, a 1-port serial device server designed to turn any serial device into an Internet ready device instantly.

This advanced product is a result of the growing demand from device manufacturers and system integrators to make their traditional devices able to communicate over Ethernet networks.

"Tens of millions of automation industry sensors, gauges, PLCs, and other devices, currently without network connectivity, are waiting for a simple and easy solution that turns them into Internet ready devices. Moxa is excited to introduce a new solution that helps customers turn those traditional devices into Internet-ready devices instantly," said Emily Wu, General Manager of Moxa Technologies. "No bigger than a cigarette pack, NPort Express is a single port RS-232/422/485 device server for the 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. It can not only be easily integrated with any type of serial device, but can also hook those devices up to the Ethernet or Internet instantly."

What benefits are there to NPort Express?
MOXA NPort Express is geared for users of traditional serial devices. And it's revolutionary features are certain to make it one of Moxa's hot-selling items for the 2001. Consider the following:

Upgrade to a Network Device - Make your serial devices Internet ready

means that you will be able to plug your device directly into an Ethernet LAN, but with no apparent change in how the computer communicates with the device. As far as the computer is concerned, the device is still connected to a COM port, even though the device may be located across the room, across town, or on the other side of the world.

Easy Serial Interface Selection - NPort Express's serial interface is easily managed on-site with external DIP Switches. As shown below, the DIP Switches are inset from the casing surface, making it highly unlikely that they will be reset inadvertently.

Easy Serial Interface Management - NPort Express's serial interface can be easily checked over the network with NPort Express Manager.

Retain Existing Firmware - Since NPort Express works as an intermediary, transforming your device's original RS-232 signal into an Ethernet signal that is sent across the network, there is no need to modify your device's existing firmware.

Retain Existing Application Software - And at the other end, the Moxa supplied driver installed on your customer's computer transforms the Ethernet signal back into the appropriate RS-232 signal. This means that there is no need to modify existing application software.

Shared By Multiple Hosts - Since your serial device is connected to the Ethernet/Internet via NPort Express, it can be configured to allow access by multiple hosts, working in much the same way that several computers in the same office share one printer. But not only that, it can also be configured to allow access to devices based on the hosts' IP address. Only those hosts that are authorized will be allowed access.

Multiple OS Support - NPort Express supports Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 native COM drivers, plus Unix and Linux fixed tty drivers.

Networking Trend - Keep pace with the worldwide networking trend.

Virtually everywhere you look, in private industry, government, schools, etc., people are moving to a networking environment. NPort Express will give your customers the edge they need to stay competitive and current, but with little or no change to their existing network infrastructure.
