AMP-IA97/IE97, a PCMCIA solution which uses Intel's MD566X chipset family, is a 3-chips solution consisting of a microprocessor, a DSP ( Digital Signal Processor ) and a SAFE ( Sigma-delta Analog Front End ) devices. Based on an open architecture ARM controller and a proprietary high bandwidth DSP, this product meets the low power and high performance requirement. The components of each individual chipset are described as follow :

• Microprocessor (μP)
  The μP implements all "AT" commands and manages all modem relays and the transmission and reception of data. The μP interfaces with the DSP. The μP's firmware contains code for all controller functions for Group 3 Fax mode and Data mode ( including error correction and data compression ).
  
  
• Digital Signal Processor (DSP)
  The DSP performs all digital signal processing functions for the chipset, including modulation, echo cancellation, call progress monitoring, voice processing, and compression of voice and video signals.
  
  
• Sigma-Delta Analog Front End (SAFE) Device
  The SAFE device uses sigma-delta techniques to convert analog information from a telephone line to digital information that can be processed by the DSP. In addition to its analog circuitry, the modem's sigma-delta function incorporates unique and proprietary digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital features. These features improve receiver accuracy, which in turn improves performance at low levels of receive signal.
