Taiwan at CeBIT 2010: Emphasizing Broadband, WiMAX

Dear Reader:

For 2010, the CeBIT organizers continue their efforts to split up the colossal nomenclature of this venerable event into well-diversified, vertically arranged topical segments, all of them stressing application orientation instead of merely presenting hardware. The most recent approach is highlighting the impact of broadband technologies, including WiMAX, on our society's rapidly changing information and communication behavior in one segment of Hall 7, dubbed "Destination IT"

This coincides with the Taiwan government efforts towards Broadband technology and WiMAX and assist these industries to attain a leadership role.

During the 1990ies the nation's communication industry focused on wired and low-end products. The government therefore began assisting the communication manufacturers with budgets for research into wireless broadband communications technology through DOIT's Technology Programs ( TDP ).These researches not only established for Taiwan a reputation for technological leadership in the international WiMAX industry but also created a complete industry LCD-system. Today, as one of the world's leading technology manufacturing epicenters, Taiwan continues its reputation as the prominent country propelling innovations and the commercial reality of WiMAX end user devices.

Taiwan's many technology companies, with the support of their government, have formed a national ecosystem comprising WiMAX chipsets CPE, network elements, test labs, system integration, commercial operation, applications and services, emphasizing this commitment. With its world-class manufacturing capabilities, technical acumen and skilled resources, these government-supported initiatives offer an entire service and application test-bed including the first WiMax Forum Applications Lab.

Local corporations have invested in the telecommunications industry for years, focusing on telecommunications equipment, such as transmission equipment for Network infrastructure, broadband access equipment, local area network equipment, customer-premises equipment and various network applications. Related to that, Taiwan manufacturers lead the world in terms of market share for all associated hardware, i.e. broadband devices, wireless NIC, VoIP and Internet Set Top Boxes (STP).

In June this year, this writer witnessed the world's first WiMAX Forum Operator Summit, hosted by Taiwan. Ron Rosnick, President of the WiMAX Forum, said on that occasion:

"Operators from around the globe are coming together here in Taipei to discuss and address their successes and challenges as a key to accelerating the mass market adoption of WiMAX Technology. Taiwan has been a hotbed for the development of wireless technologies, and now as one of the premier champions of WiMAX through its commitment to driving the technology and products forward. It is only fitting that we are here today, discussing specific steps, best approaches and timelines to bring mobile internet services to consumers anytime, anywhere."

Hopefully, this spirit will flow over to CeBIT 2010. WiMAX and Broadband equipment exhibitors will be incorporated in the TAIWAN TELECOMMUNICATION AND NAVIGATION PAVILION in Hall 7, Several top players have already signed up, but because of the present industry trends not to register until the burst of deadlines, we must wait for the final shape of the Taiwan contingent to CeBIT well into New Year.

Now, our usual dropping of a few names: Proscend Communications, established in the Hsinchu Science Park, develops and manufactures innovative broadband products for networking. It is one of the leading suppliers of SHDSL and Enterprise Networking systems with well-known OEM/ODM accounts in this field. Baudtec, specializing in data communication products for home and business users alike, designs comprehensive internet access products, i.e. IAD ( Integrated Access Devices ), VoIP access devices, Homeplug wireless devices, with CE and FCC certification for most ranges. Qno Technology is a leading developer of broadband management and network security products. Honored with numerous IT awards and acclaims, Qno has helped small and medium size businesses to reduce network operation cost and ensure IT security with its multi-WAN network security routers. In a media survey among the most influential network equipment companies in China, Qno has been continuously voted to rank among the top 10 brand names. Billion Electric provides home user with comprehensive home networking solutions ranging from wired and wireless ADSL2+ routers, ViOP,,, 3G/HSDPA,SHDSL, VDSL2, GPON/Fiber gateway and HomePlug AV adapters to broadband routers. Two further main sections are Office Networking Solutions and Telco/ISP Business solutions. And MSI (Micro Star International ) a worldwide operating company with websites in nearly every living language and a huge product range including high-speed WLAN Routers and dual net combo PC cards with transmission rates of up to54 MBs in the 2,4 GHz frequency band.

Sorry, folks, that's all for now - - watch our e-papers for more details when we are closer to CeBIT.

And now for something completely different:

Where to place CeBIT amongst competing ICT events?

There is no shortage of commentators calling the refurbished CeBIT a vanity fair, short of an ICT Disneyland, saying that never in its history the gap between the organizer's product and the actual needs of the participants has been greater than now. Right or wrong?

Well, let us only tear apart one single argument: CeBIT antagonists mostly demand more "Segmentation " - - a new catchword used as the ultimate requirement for ICT business gatherings of today: Specialized events, covering a single topic at a time, but in depth, and with selected qualified attendees, peers on equal level, devoid of disturbance by outsiders, and therefore prefer to call CeBIT just the antonym of segmentation.

However, if we look at the thematic hall plans of CeBIT 2010 , what do we see ? Vertical single topics like "Business Communications" - - "Banking and Finance World" - - "Open Source Computing", "Security World", "Cloud Computing" " Webciety ", "Public Sector Parc", "Enterprise Applications", "Internet and Mobile Phone Solutions", "Broadband World", "Next Level 3D", "Professional Data Center", "Planet Reseller" "Global Conferences " and many more….

So, what else is that but Segmentation? Actually CeBIT is now a line-up of several independent, though technologically interrelated events, strictly vertically organized, side-by-side, in one place, at one time - - a role model that the mother of all fairs, Hannover Messe, already successfully accomplished , even though it took decades of birth pain. Only Hannover with its gargantuan fairground can try to approach concepts like this. - - So, are CeBIT opponents eating sour grapes ?

It is not quite that uncomplicated. You can segment exhibitor sectors easily by putting them into vertically organized topical halls, but you cannot easily segment visitors. It is a fact, - as simple as it is mostly overlooked or ignored - that experts of a certain trade want to be among themselves, in close ranks, on "eye-level" ( a new trendy catchphrase ! ), and that all others not belonging to their circles should not be seen, because they are not wanted.

Let's face it: Gentry does not want to mix with commons, and seasoned ICT experts not with juvenile end user riff-raff, extruding from Hannover's green streetcars like ground beef off a meat grinder, spilling indiscriminately into all halls, killing the business atmosphere. Trade exhibitors want every visitor a potential customer or opinion leader, because that is the only reason they came for, at high costs and from as far as Asia, though in dwindling numbers when they feel that their requirements are not met.

At CeBIT 2010 you will see that the desired segmentation process has been perfectly accomplished for the exhibitor side. But the process is not completed before finding ways to separate visitors of different whereabouts or limited access to events where amateurs are a disturbing factor. We obviously need more Planet Reseller likes. A top executive, who is willing to pay 3990 EUR for the exclusive atmosphere of a 3GSM Barcelona will definitely not file with Joe Sixpack through the same turnstile.

Insider rumors have it that solutions are already being focused and should be expected to be implemented in due course. Cactuses burst into bloom when watering is kept meager. In our fast-paced world of today, there ain't no allowances for decades of birth pains no more !

CeBIT 2010 Hannover - - let's hope for the Best !

Yours truly,

Yours truly,
