Taiwan at CeBIT 2009: Returning undaunted, amidst global unease, fear and trepidation !

Dear Readers,

This publication, TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY, exclusively covering Taiwan's appearance at CeBIT events, now enters its 10 th year. And ever since, during the hot summer months, this editor allowed his publication a little breather or, botanically speaking, a dormant period", in order to recover from the bygone CeBIT and to prepare for the stress of propping up the next CeBIT.

However, never before did this dormant period take so unwillingly long, and never before have I been looking forward so impatiently for the desirable stress to come forth. But now, TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY is back in full swing, and the reason for the inevitable delay hardly needs to be explained:

The world economy is experiencing unprecedented roller-coaster times. Your guess is as good as mine when this freaky ride will come to a standstill and we can all get off. Is it not frightening when even high-caliber financial specialists are telling you that the best place to keep your money now is under your pillow ? My banker told me this, and he did not seem to be joking. Of course, it is a relief that the financial bubble did burst now, and bruising as it was, we finally know now what we should have known all the time: The sole culprit was the immense gap deceptively allowed to develop between a blown-up stock market and the real economy - - but must it have taken so long to learn that simple greed was the cause and we, the innocent, now have to fix the system ?

CeBIT has around 70 participating countries and not one seems to be unaffected by the present crisis, including Taiwan with its many SME enterprises who traditionally operate from hand-to-mouth.

However, on a positive note, Taiwan is still the most trade fair-conscious country in all of Asia, and the magnitude of its contingent to CeBIT 2009 is cleared by now, albeit a little delayed for explicable procrastinating by some. While the final roll call will take a few weeks more to take shape, the locations of those traditional theme-oriented TAIWAN PAVILIONS are already fixed :

The dissimilar role of Asia on ICT fairs

The mainstay of Asia's ICT industries is to provide hardware for all the rest of the world. At the same time, the drastically restructured CeBIT is diversifying into many additional and more sophisticated topics than ever before, emphasizing Problem Solutions", Lifestyle", Web- and what-not Societies" and all other kinds of high minded bits and pieces.

But remember: every single one of these high flying ideas need to be backed-up by solid hardware or they cannot not happen. Now therefore, will you believe this veteran of 45 years in the trade show business: Although momentarily dwindling at CeBIT for reasons still to be discussed, the core of each ICT trade show in the world should be, must be and will in all future be the hardware sector !

And that is where our island nation comes in as the world's major supplier, at least according to the Taiwan 2008 world market share figures, just published by the Market Intelligence Center (MIC) of the government-backed Institute for Information Industry:

Netbook PCs: 99,0 % - Motherboards: 92,5 % - Notebook PCs: 92,5 % - LCD Monitors: 67,2 % - CDT Monitors : 52,9 % - DSC: 41,1 % - Cable Modems: 90,2 % - WLAN NIC: 89,0 % - DSL CPE: 77,8 % - VoIP Routers: 76,1 % - IP Phones: 69,1%

In addition, the MIC quotes Taiwan AS 2 nd worlde wide in WLAN APs, Servers, Cable STBs, Desktop PCs and ODD.

In the midst of an economic situation which could not be more hostile than today, the CeBIT makers, in restructuring their event, now aspire to challenge nearly every textbook dogma of what a trade fair was in the olden times. Will they succeed ? And what will be the approach of those usual naysayers and critics, including the press, if they fail ? In this respect, let us be inspired, comforted and reassured by what Theodore Roosevelt ( U.S. president 1901 – 1909 ) wrote:

"It is not the critic who counts, not those who point out how the strong man stumbled, or where a doer of deeds could have done them better.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena: The man who strives bravely, whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood; who errs and comes short again and again…..who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause - - who, at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, - - and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least failed while having dared greatly, so that his place in history shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."

Only those of you who decide to travel to Hannover as usual will be able to witness the impact of these changes. And - in the spirit of Green IT - your best appearance at the fairground will be: Kill nothing but time, take nothing but inspirations, and leave nothing but orders !
