Taiwan at CeBIT 2008: Old Friends - - New Concept !

The " three pillars " on which the much touted new CeBIT is resting seem to be of different heights as the show with its huge program of 1.200 congresses and other ancillary events seems to tilt heavily to the narrative side. Seemingly, the organizers say that hardware no longer is everything - - but I say, without hardware everything is nothing! Therefore the old fashioned Taiwan trade show approach with manufacturers unceremoniously slapping hardware into showcases and sit back waiting for buyers is a much desirable counterbalance for a show concept that, if not controlled tightly, can degenerate into a snake pit of vanity and verbiage.

Asian ICT industries concentrate solely on supplying hardware to the rest of the world, either as OBM, OEM, ODM or EMS. Taiwan-controlled companies supply the major part of this volume, governing nearly every technology sector, including 90% of laptop shipments worldwide.

The big foreign brand buyers alone purchased ICT products worth US$ 81.2 billion in 2007 according to the Market Intelligence Center (MIC) of the Institute for Information Industries (III) in Taipei and it forecasts an increase to over US$ 100 billion for 2008 ! A considerable share of this business is initiated on the small number of dominating ICT trade shows of which CeBIT is the most prominent.

Opening Ceremonies !

The word "Messe" in all German trade show's names is actually the German term for the religious "mass", because more than 800 years ago the first German trade shows took place in the arcades of churches, where the traders laid out their spreads waiting for the church going crowds to leave the "mass" and open their purses.

Already in that era exhibitors knew that the number of visitors increased heavily when the "masses" were celebrated by famous preachers, popular for attracting people through their eloquence and voluble wordiness. This has not changed over the centuries and now you know why today's trade show organizers are so eagerly striving for prominent keynote speakers, celebrities and dignitaries to preside over their opening ceremonies!

In 17 th century masses the most famous sermonizer was monk Abraham a Sancta Clara , a heavy-set giant of a man, legendary for impressing humble audiences with his thunderous voice and gargantuan, threatening gesticulation. In 20 th century opening ceremonies the unchallenged sermonizer was his contemporary look-alike Helmut Kohl , a German chancellor who also could preach hot hell in a freezing snow, but often deviated from his written manuscripts into the tricky garden path of free speech, making him the nightmare of interpreters.

And for this coming 21 st century CeBIT 2008 opening we look forward to what the national president of France might have prepared to tell us.

A veteran of 42 years in the trade fair trade, he is ready to answer all the questions that you may have stockpiled about this subject, but were always afraid to ask. He has no illusions about the sometimes disturbed relations that German journalists have with trade fair companies including their often malicious ways of interpreting ( or more precise, misinterpreting ) figures and facts. But don't be shy, all colleagues are equally welcome, the willing and the unwilling, the gentle and the abrasive, the cognizant and the ignorant, the investigative and the supportive, malicious scribblers as well as constructive loyalists.

Also, do not hesitate to come when suffering a hangover from one of the many stand parties and similar nightly debaucheries CeBIT is so famous for; you do not have to owe your liver an apology - - the only imbibementations on the Taiwan Pavilions are black coffee, green tea and crystal clear mineral water.
