Taiwan at CeBIT 2008: Fixed Line Communication & Networks

Dear Reader:
This 7 th preview introduces those two TAIWAN PAVILIONS in Halls 12 and 13 ( each 500 sqm large ! ) featuring telecommunication in terms of fixed line and networks technology. Every year, this e-paper is most difficult to write, because it covers a topic where Taiwan is a dominant hardware supplier to the rest of the world: Networks - Broadband Internet - Gigabit Ethernet - Wireless LAN - IP Telephony - Networking peripheral equipment. Why difficult ? Because even a simple itemization of all products shown at CeBIT would burst the seams of this newsletter - - without leaving any space for the traditional second part so many readers seem to be looking forward to.
But here cometh help ! CeBIT Hannover publishes a preliminary list of exhibitors on its own website. So, for your visit preparation ( and you should really prepare to visit CeBIT 2008 ! ) call www.cebit.de/exhibitorsproducts . From the "all nations" field, select "Taiwan" and click "Search". This will drum up an alphabetical list of all Taiwan exhibitors including their homepage addresses - - so you can retrieve the particulars of those companies that we highlight hereunder and make your appointments. And do not forget data bank and product news on TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY ! A few concentrated hours of preparation on the net might save you 10 times that much in endurance marches ("Passo Bersagleri" for our Italian readers ! ) at Hannover's larger-than-life exhibition center !
Wireless broadband products and converged devices that integrate Internet functionality and multimedia applications are likely to be mainstream products for Taiwan-based network equipment makers. Looking at the most promising sector, the current development of WiMAX, makers here have built up contract production relationships with international telecom equipment vendors such as Motorola, Alcatel, Alvarion and SR Telecom, which will help Taiwan WiMAX equipment to reach mass-production scale this year. According to MIC, the major standard for products will be 802.16 wave 2 and MIMO and beam forming functions will be incorporated. Also, transmitting capability will increase 1.5 times. Furthermore, Taiwan manufacturers are actively building up WiMAX CO (Central Office ) equipment R & D capabilities and wireless technology talents and also focus on web communication, mobile phone and hi-tech base station facilities.
And here, a selection of prominent Taiwan exhibitors in this field: Accton , a global OEM leader in advanced networking and communication equipment. Tidbit: Healthpoint 500, a wireless monitoring system between seniors and their caregivers .
Zyxel, the company that grew from a modem maker to a world leading broadband access solutions provider announced that in the "Clean & Green Watch 2007 by the Asian Corporate Governance Association has been ranked No. 2 out of 582 companies for its achievements in in employing more energy-efficient, waste-reducing toxic-reduced lightweight materials.
Wistron , showing satellite multimedia, TV products, digital radios and automotive electronics, mobile phones and networking devices. Specially to mention: the Android Phone, a slab-style smart phone with touch screen and QWERTY keyboard. Micronet, the big name in WLAN, IP Telephony, Gibabit Ethernet and networking peripherals. Sercom , leading networking solutions provider with wireless networking products, home networking products, small business communication products and network surveillance equipment.
Last, but not least, JYH ENG with copper and fiber optic lines.

Leadership Development !
After seven e-papers stuffed with dry technology your mind might need one minute of break.
As a man of wide reading you know "The One-Minute Manager "by Ken Blanchard, a simple 147 page paperback book that has sold more than13 million copies over 20 years, was translated into 37 languages and still today sells another 10.000 copies each month. His famous three basic management ideas are known as the "three secrets" : one-minute goals, one-minute praisings and one-minute reprimands.
But what is a "Three Minute Manager " ? It is a "Lesson in Leadership", where FORTUNE MAGAZINE presents a problem to three prominent management specialists and asks for their one-minute solution. The last time it was December 24, 2007, and one problem to solve was what to do if you have to clean up a mess in your company and must recruit new talents to prosper – either from your own staff or external , and what should their qualifications be ? I am not famous and therefore FORTUNE would never ask me, so let me put my opinion to you here:
Regardless of whom you assign, your newcomers or upstarts MUST be familiar with your trade and the culture of your organization to possess what Germans call "Stallgeruch", a translation-defying word, meaning "scent of the same horse stable"in order to be accepted by their subordinates and peers. It's best explained by two theoretical examples:
Your new press spokesman must not necessarily be a five-star journalist, but should at least have a few years of writing and editing experience and be able to put a simple press release so proficiently to paper that his own staff will not laugh him out of the door.
Your new catering chief or F&B manager must not necessarily be a three-star cook, but in order to be respected by his staff should at least be able to prepare, with his very own hands, a simple meal that the next trucker would not dump in his face.
Got the general idea ? Then let me sum-up what the legendary Bill George, an outspoken management expert with an impeccable record as CEO of some of America's finest companies and now a HARVARD professor of Management Practice said in FORTUNE MAGAZINE:
"You need the best people from your organization to get in there, (but) often the best people don't want to clean up messes. Say to them "I need you to go there, it's your job. You will never get fired for making a mistake, but you will get fired for covering it up!" Bill also advises "Get some fresh eyes involved too!", but warns at the same time:
"Don't bring in outside hotshots who don't understand the culture !"
