Taiwan at CeBIT 2008: Great Performance at RFID, Auto ID, POS

Dear Reader:

Practically all subscribers to TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY ( except the press ) are buyers for ICT hardware overseas and its manufacturers in Taiwan. Therefore, our annual preview e-papers serve to point to your respective fields of business on our 11 TAIWAN PAVILIONS, which, at CeBIT 2008 are unchangedly scattered over as many halls on this world's biggest fair ground.

2008 is the year where CeBIT will modify its general appearance and attitude under the demanding challenges of shifting business focuses and information behavior. While other segments face adjustments that in euphemistic military lingo sound like “ straightening of fronts ” or even " strategic retreats ” the performance of Taiwan in today's captioned subject - RFID & Co. - will be as great as ever.

If you feel like it, you may click my 19 th December 2006 e-paper from the archive on our front page, in which I analyzed situation, trend and outlook of this island's RFID industry. Because little has changed, and if, then only to the better. Reassured by the promising development of this sector, new suppliers mainly already existing prominent manufacturers seeking to expand into this promising field are establishing here in Taiwan ( and may be ready a strong appearance at CeBIT 2009 and onward ) including opinion leaders such as Acer and Tatung, which have resolved to set foot in the RFID industry, and in addition, papermaker Yuen Foong Yu will form a new company to specialize in RFID hardware, according to latest news. Acer said it would cooperate with the U.S. software developer VeriSign to set up an EPCglobal network as an exclusive provider of the software in Taiwan.

The government-supported Institute for Information Industries ( III ) predicted that the annual production value for the RFID industry will jump to the equivalent of US$ 110 million and US$ 371 million in 2008 and 2010 respectively, with an 76,3% compound annual growth rate. The Executive Yuan ( Taiwan's Cabinet ) has planned to pour at least 3,6 billion Taiwan Dollars into the development of the RFID industry during the next three years, and will integrate public and private resources to achieve such goal, aiming to form an integrated supply chain for RFID-related industries from this year on and enhance the production value of this industry.

And here, our usual directions to have you float, without fail, to our topic-related TAIWAN PAVILIONS, as well as some namedropping to wet your appetite AUTO ID/RFID is in Hall 7 this time, and among the companies are ARGOX Information, PC Worth Int'l, Bitatek, and GIGA-TMS. POS will be concentrated in Hall 17, among others with Fametech, Firich Enterprises, GIGA-TMS, Mythology Tech Express, POSIFLEX and TOPVISION DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES.

Happy Hunting ! Or should we better modify this traditional deerstalkers salute to "HAPPY SOURCING ! " just for CeBIT ?

And now for something completely different:

Dr. Strangelove or: How you Learn to Stop Worrying and Love the New CeBIT !

During the glory days of the Internet bubble, thousands of gold digging entrepreneurs registered for pilgrimages to their Mecca, also known as CeBIT, happy enough when high on top of the waiting list. So, it was easy for jubilant organizers to treat criticism of the inevitable excesses and warnings of predictable consequences as a pure act of sacrilege. I always felt like a stinky traitor, deserving to have my head shaven in public and sent into humiliated exile in some god forsaken backwater like Elba or St. Helena, or even worse, Hannover.

But, to be objective, was the impact really “predictable” and " inevitable " ? Now, in retroactive, every trend and development seems obvious. But before, CeBIT makers could only depend on their own guts. No guts - no glory ! Could they count on news analysis and expert commentaries? Heavens forbid! Journalists and other disrespectable people with no feeling for the burden of command find censure and condemnation easy all the time. And the “expertise” of those famous rapacious management consultants always reminded me of Phytia, the oracle priestess of Delphy: Every time one of their highly paid-for prophecies turned out be rubbish, history repeated itself:

When Kroisos, the king of Lydia, fell victim to the superficial meaning of the oracle's double-tongued interpretation instead of the obscure hidden sense, nobody dared to name Phytia a crooky slydog, but everybody said that the King of the Lydians was certifiably stupid.

While CeBIT was ( and will continue to be ) the world's mirror of the ICT trade, a mirror is no crystal ball. You have to live through experience. Accordingly, the new CeBIT is now prepared to offer a better environment for that type of visitor we insatiable Taiwanese are the only one we want to meet - - the buyer with the “pen” to write contracts. New target groups, the responsible CeBIT official told me, are being addressed and encouraged and their trips eased. Their red-carpet treatment might even consist of serving refreshments during the process of mandatory registrations - - coffee, tea and cookies for everybody and ( though not finally confirmed ) chilled water and dates for Arabian buyers.

That means, you as our permanent reader and ardent CeBIT traveler must prepare to compete with many fresh groups of buyers, all using extreme haste to rush to our TAIWAN PAVILIONS as first priority. So this notice also serves as a last-minute support for those of our dormant exhibitors who still hesitate to sign up.

The whole world of ICT will be at CeBIT Hannover - - and so should you !

Yours truly,

Yours truly,
