Taiwan at CeBIT 2007: Wireless Communication & Mobile Phone Accessories

Dear Reader:
The telecommunication industry of Taiwan is now one of the most vibrant in the Asia Pacific region. The country is moving quickly to meet its government's goal of Taiwan being a regional hub for information-based industries by 2008. Analysts agree that there is still much to be done, but the prospects for companies that provide innovative products and services to meet that objective are excellent.
With its strong focus on the role of technology throughout its economy, - and telecommunication in particular - it is no surprise that Taiwan has not only one of the world's most advanced telecommunication networks for its own country but is also the world's predominant manufacturing center for the sectors like wireless communication and mobile phone accessories, which are the two topics of this our last preview e-paper before CeBIT.
Typical for the whole industry, hundreds of millions mobile phones have been and are shipped fromTaiwan factories that are not widely known to the general public, because the products are contract manufactured for all the most famous brands on the world market.
This also counts for nearly all the other knick-knacks in the CeBIT nomenclature. For instance, due to the growing penetration of built-in WLAN capabilities in notebook computers the rise of shipments of network interface cards and wireless routers has raised Taiwan's world market share for Wirelesss LAN equipment to 95%.
In CeBIT Hall 25, 50% of space belongs to mobile phone accessories, where you will be attracted by world leading brands such as Plantronics, GN Netcom, Santok, Cellular Italia, Eurotek Italia - - what a nice ambient for our TAIWAN PAVILION with 37 exhibitors, including bigwigs like GG Telecom, Global Target, BlueDect, Great well, Huey Chia, OMIZ ( watch out for their Lady Bluetooth Pendant Headset ! ) , ETI, Advanced & Wise.
Hall 26 is devoted to mobile phones, smart phones, pocket PC phones, HSPDA, WiFi and WIMAX devices, where again household names like SAMSUNG ( on over 2.000 sqm ! ) Sony Ericsson ( 1.000 sqm ) O2 ( 1.500 sqm ) Sagem, debitel and Deutsche Telecom will hopefully not dwarf but enhance the attention to our TAIWAN PAVILION with household names like D-NET, E-Ten ( a new Pocket PC Phone !) Gigabyte Communication ( new: Microsoft Windows Mobile Based Analog TV PPC Phones, GPS Pocket PC Phones, Digital TV Pocket PC Phones ), and I-Care as mobile/PC/PDA/TV phone providers, while Innodisk, Kingmax, Lightspeed and TEC offer mobile phone storage.
Located farther away on the TAIWAN PAVILION in Hall 11 I have reason to single out WINTECRONICS for its exceptionally wide range of professional two-way radios, including those increasingly popular PMR types for unlicensed private use, made with 8 to 199 channels, depending on the regulations of the respective countries worldwide.
All the rest - - car kits, handsfree kits, headsets, data cables, wireless terminals, USB and VoIP products and a myriad of other accessories just demonstrates that there is no other Asian manufacturing base like Taiwan where designers and makers attach so much loving care to all imaginable accessories and where so many small makers pay attention to the needs of even low volume buyers according to the good old Taiwan SME philosophy:" No way too far and no order too small !"
And now for something completely different:
According to organizer's press releases, CeBIT, by 2008, will be totally renovated and repositioned for enhanced user benefits. But they already give you a fore-taste this year: Stressing the role of ancillary events over the mere presentation of technical products !
In the grandiose lingo so typical for Hannover that translates into"World Elite from Industry, Media and Government to Network at CeBIT - - with over 1,000 high-level conferences, keynotes, forums and workshops."
It is simple logic: The mere spectacle of products that once were technical sensations are now shelf items for shopping carts no longer able to attract crowds. And the industry has either run out of steam or is just taking a breather before coming out with a new thingamajig to lure them back.
So, a bunch of conference organizers hastens to tell us that what we need now is not to discuss technologies but their impact on our lives.
There will be hundreds of such events at CeBIT, but a case in point is the biggest ( by number and weight of speakers ), the Global Digital Magazine Media 2.0 Conference. This well-known international publishers congress will discuss ( but will it also reach conclusions ??? ) what has become of the World Wide Web and where it will go. As the Web has totally escaped control by regrettably becoming accessible to the misera plebs, its situation is much the same as buying a license-free AK47 assault rifle in an American gun shop: Everybody knows how to operate it, but hardly anybody cares for the damage he causes when pulling the trigger.
This writer, an ardent antagonist of needless meetings finds it difficult to give an unbiased opinion, So, find out yourself from the"Events" button on the CeBIT homepage. They are categorized into Summits, Keynotes, Fireside Chats, ICT World Luncheons, Specialist Conferences, Forums, Press Conferences, Presentations, and all have their designated purpose.
Most conferences will offer or discuss solutions for pending problems - - just beware of those for which their creators obviously had a hard time to find problems for existing solutions. Anyway, as Robert Oppenheimer said, there are always those geniuses who know the answer before the question.
My surefire tip for efficiency is what the Germans call "Fachtagungen" , specialist conferences where seasoned industry practitioners advise other seasoned practitioners - - they are sheer audience-pleasers because both sides don't waste time for bullshit.
On the other end, there are those bombastic "Summit" events - - conspicuous by over-exaggerated names-dropping of prominent notabilities, calculatingly targeted to attract audiences of the Mr.Nobody type, eager to bask in their radiance and to rub shoulders with them for a 4-digit conference fee. Avoid them by all means - - unless, of course, your psychiatrist has diagnosed you an attention deficit disorder and says you need to boost your self-esteem.
Hannover, of which this writer is a veteran of 43 years, is the only trade fair venue in the whole world wittingly engaging in high-level political marketing since its inception and therefore, unavoidably, always has had its share of busybodies and pompous asses with their associated vanity, verbiage, garrulity and other manifestations of self-importance- - a real hotbed for any misanthrope to study behaviorism.
