Taiwan at CeBIT 2007: Portable Computing at Large and Home Electronics to Boot

Dear Reader:

This 4 th run-up to CeBIT feeds you on PDA, Notebook Computing, UMPC and Home Electronics, where Taiwan exhibitors will excel in Halls 1, 2 and 21. Notebooks at large will clearly continue to stand out as the mainstay of Taiwan 's ICT industry in 2007, and consequently dominates today's e-paper:

With TFT LCD and Intel Celeron CoreSolo CPU prices to remain stable in 2007, the ASP ( average selling price ) of notebooks are predicted to be kept stable, which means a high-volume business at cutthroat competition. The Taiwan-based Topology Research Institute expects Microsoft's Vista operating system and Intel's Santa Rosa platform will boost the notebook market in 2007, with shipments growing 20% to 87,7 million pieces worldwide, compared to the 72,8 million units this year. Another local analyst source went as high as 97,4 million pieces. TRI also itemizes that the ASP, having f allen to US$ 1,097 this year from US$1,219 last year will become more stable next year at US$1,097.

Regarding the quantities necessary today to stay in business, headlines in the Taiwan business press these days gives one the shudder:

  • ESC acquires Uniwill, sets goal of 3 million for 2007
  • Quanta ships 2.2 million notebooks in November
  • China made over 50 million notebooks from Jan-Oct.

and so on

Taiwan has 14 ODMs that produce notebook computers for the mainstream market, and their total production capacity alone is more than enough to satisfy global demand, a clear indicator for the price war. In addition, with the notebook segment growing at a much faster rate than the overall PC industry, and with manufacturing notebooks having a low barrier to entry, companies have continued entering the production basis, despite the crowded landscape. Motherboard makers MSI and the EMS ( Electronic Manufacturing Services ) giant Foxconn have both launched into notebook production, too.

So far and no further, just enough to tune you in to the situation you will face as a buyer when you come to CeBIT ( Surely, you are coming, aren't you ? ) .

DVB-T, DVD players, LCD TV and Media Players from Taiwan are predicted to keep their position as hot topics in the European consumer goods market. The growth rate for DVD Players will remain 20% annually, according to local analysts.

Taiwan makers of LCD TVs have withnessed their shipments rise significantly in 2005 and expect to have become the No. 1 supplier in the world, as soon as this year's final statistics are out.

Want some names dropping ? O.K. Clevo will be at CeBIT with D900 desktop and LV 220C , certified by Intel VIIV and supporting Windows VISA media center functions.

Amtek will show Orgami T700, an UMPC ( ultra-mobile computer ) with handwriting recognition, built-in digitizer and applicable for music, video, navigation, e-mail and communication through the Internet.

UMPC prices from Taiwan are expected down to US$600 -700 in 2007, and the price range will slide to US$400-500 between 2009 and 2010, the Chinese-language Apple Daily cited Intel executives as saying.

TEKOM will feature its GX/652, a GPS Camera, the first DSC with GPS built in to allow photographers to capture pictures with location and linked to Google Earth to map their photos (!!)

( It is admirable what never-ending stream of electronic gadgets illustrious marketers dream up to divert the minds of plebian masses from their daily misery - - and comforting as well, as it will keep trade show organizers alive ! )

And famous giants such as Gigabyte, Elitegroup. MSI and Posiflex told us that the news about what they will be featuring at CeBIT is still in the making and cannot be revealed at this point. So, there might be quite some surprises when you come to CeBIT as a buyer ( Surely, you are coming, aren't you ?? )

And now for something completely different:

“ If what I write cannot shake up others with a punch to the forehead, why should I bother to write at all ?” said German novelist Otto Julius Bierbaum in 1900.

At that time, the only firewalls to overcome were stubborn minds. Today, as an online publisher you have to fight, overcome, defeat, crush, conquer and circumnavigate sophisticated Internet and e-mail firewalls before you can even reach those stubborn minds, which makes publicizing and advertising even more difficult.

It was for statistic reasons that I in e-paper No. 2 asked for a short confirmation of receipt from your side. My thanks to those who already responded, but I feel that it is needed to prolong this head count for the benefit of those who did not take notice the first time.

So again: If you have received this here paper in good shape and format, kindly click on my e-mail address below and say so - - one word would do, if you are pressed for time. Please remember that we are in the show business, where people thrive on applause. Dale Carnegie, the father of all motivation Gurus, recommended in 1928:
