Taiwan at CeBIT 2007: The Telematics and Navigation Pavilion |
|
 |
Dear Reader:
As already once said on this occasion, not only an insulin shock can block the human memory, an information shock may bear the same risk. This is why our annual preview e-papers for CeBIT cover the sheer incredible variety of Taiwan products in careful dosages, - topic by topic - pavilion by pavilion - piece by piece -Today, we start with the first of our 11 Taiwan Pavilions in 2007.
"Navigation" serves as a definition by itself, while "Telematic" needs some explanation as it is newspeak - - an artificial term originally coined to mean the convergence of telecommunications and information processing. It insinuated the linking of at least two different EDP systems with the aid of a telecommunication network plus special data processing. In the daily lingo of hardware traders, the term later evolved to refer to automation in automobiles, GPS navigation, integrated hands-free cellphones, wireless communications and automatic driving assistance systems, remote diagnostics and every sort of interlaced on-board units (OBUs) in automotive electronics, all now coming to us under the telematics umbrella. And this is where Taiwan soothsayers envision a niche that may become a full new independent market:
In the booming global automotive electronics sector, Taiwan companies are expected to gain great opportunities in manufacturing such OBU equipment and telematics products, at least according to the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK) of the country's famed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)
In 2008, the IEK forecasts, the production value of Taiwan's automotive electronics industry is expected to reach the equivalent of US$923 million, and some products, such as LEDs are expected to enjoy very high growth rates, as new car models in the near future require about 60 LEDs in various indicators. In Europe , more than 60% of new cars are already equipped with LED third brake lights. Also LED headlamps are expected to become common in two or three years after some technical bottlenecks are solved.
Also, the global market for AVL and telematics products is projected to grow at CAGR of 27percent from US$ 4.1 billion in 2001 to US$35 billion in 2010, according to Taiwan's Telematics Research Group; and although Taiwan has just started the development of telematics, ITRI is confident that these makers will be able to penetrate the world market.
Currently, a large number of small and medium scale enterprises can manufacture in-vehicle GPS devices. Only a few large makers have facilities to produce ready-to-install telematics consoles into automobiles. These companies work closely with car manufacturers in order to come up with customized devices.
CeBIT 2007 to expand Telematics & Navigation
Therefore, it comes as a blessing that the CeBIT organizers, which made Telematics & Navigation already one of the prime topics at CeBIT 2006, will further expand this sector in 2007, using the full space of Hall 11 instead of the previous two thirds, and demonstrating now the entire telematics chain, from data acquisition to end devices. ( Please see also the " headline news " section of this publication ! )
Leading companies like ALK, BURY, Falk Marco Polo, GARMIN, klickTel, GPS-Buddy, Map & Guide, Mio, Nateq, Navigon, PTV, Tom Tom - - they'll all be there ! In addition, there will be 50 Taiwan exhibitors from this sector, including prominent names like Globalsat, Royaltek, Holus, Leadtek, Hamshing, ManGo etc., covering GPS, car navigation, Galileo and Mobile TV.
There is much more to tell, but e-papers must be concise, or readers will delete them, at least it is said so. Therefore, please refer regularly to our portal TAIWAN-TECHNOLOGY, with its product news , headline news and exhibitor data bank , to keep abreast of all developments so that you will travel to CeBIT well prepared.
And now for something completely different:
It requires less and less skill to drive a car today, but it becomes increasingly difficult to stop and park it.
Similarly, newsletters: It does not take much skill to compile one and blow it into the Internet - - but will it reach the receiving end ? Frankly, for an online publisher it has now grown to a specialist academic discipline in the greater field of mass communication to find ways to signal to his target groups the seriousness of his intentions, ( i.e. by a legitimate sender address and credible subject lines ) not to end up in the nets of rising firewalls and sophisticated Spam filters.
Now therefore, I wonder if you, our dear reader, would do this humble editor a small favor ? Just call up his personal e-mail address at the bottom of this e-paper and tell him by only one word or two in the subject line that you received this e-paper in good shape ? ( Further comments, of course are welcome ! )
It seems that mailbags sent 120 years ago across the wild, wild west of America took longer, but they arrived at least, with 100% certainty. That distinguishes carriers like the Wells Fargo stage coach from the Internet.
And what seems to be the most sensible consequence? : Well, with the electronic information avalanche escalating out of control, it is more than ever justified that you travel to Hannover and grace CeBIT with your personal attendance
The best data transfer is still from face-to-face !
And here, some previews from our exhibitors:
