Taiwan at CeBIT 2006: Stressing
Entertainment Electronics
|
|
 |
Dear Reader:
No other event should be more qualified to demonstrate the convergence
of ICT and consumer electronics than CeBIT, the world's biggest trade
show, not only of its kind, but by and large. All other traditional consumer
electronics shows which once featured steam radios, gramophones and electronic
egg timers before "Home Theater" or "Digital Living"
were invented must first attract ICT industries to upgrade their events,
while at CeBIT, they are already there since two decades, and by the thousands.
The 700-plus contingent of Taiwan to CeBIT 2006 will do its part to show
it.
Taiwan is still the world's largest supplier for 8 major hardware categories
with a combined shipment value expected to run over US$85,6 billion, up
from the US$77 billion of 2005.
Buoyed by Intel's upcoming launch of its "Viiv" consumer PC
platform, demand for special "entertainment PCs" or media centers
for the "digital home" based on the Microsoft Windows XP Media
Center Edition (MCE) is expected to heat up in 2006, according to sources
at Taiwan PC makers. A surge of entertainment PCs is expected to improve
the low gross margin for desktop PCs.
An entertainment PC will feature a variety of built-in-multimedia capabilities,
including DVD and receiver, digital/analog TV and digital sound appliances
With a remote control in hand, entertainment PCs could present streamed
audio and video capabilities, to fulfill the concept of a "digital
home", Taiwan sources commented. In addition, HDD companies are now
challenged with the task of churning out 1-inch micro drives for the storage
of digital content in personal media players, MP3 players, digital still
cameras, digital video cameras, set-top boxes, and digital video recorders.
Many companies recognize the need for a storage-centric home, serving
home networks, backups, movies in demand and other applications.
All of these development present new challenges to cope with, and therefore,
at this appropriate occasion:
Facing the need to continuously fine-tune CeBIT,
this world's most important ICT show, for challenges and trends of tomorrow
for which there did not even exist technical terms yesterday, I feel sorry
for those of my German press colleagues who disgrace themselves in bashing
these worthwhile efforts as a "constant struggle to find a final
concept." There can be no final concept - - and they should know
it ! "Nichts ist bestandiger als der Wandel !" ( Nothing is
more constant than changes to the better ! ) And this is not even a new
insight but true since the invention of the wheel was.
Now to trivial matters:
This second last e-paper before CeBIT deals with the line-up of three
more halls:
Hall 2: The Taiwan PC, Notebook & Consumer Electronics Pavilion.
Featuring notebook computers, Panel PCs, MP3 players, PMP, CF/SD cards.
Some famous brands within the pavilion: Clevo, Chicony, Adata, and, likewise
famous as individual exhibitors. Asus, Tatung and Mitac.
Hall 22: The Taiwan Notebook & Consumer Electronics Pavilion.
In addition to many peripheral providers mentioned in previous e-papers,
we today stress the presence of titans in the field of PC system providers
such as MSI ( 450 sqm ! ), Elitegroup (300 sqm ! ) who have become total
solution suppliers now. AAnd not to forget Intervideo, Ulead and Inventec.
Hall 23: The Taiwan Graphic Cards & Consumer Electronic Pavilion,
featuring (as you would expect ) graphic/sound cards, MP3 players, Speakers,
DVB-T, TV tuner cards, headphone products. Prominent names within the
pavilion: Animation, GEIL and Utmost. Among the individual exhibiting
titans: Gigabyte (350 sm !) Foxconn (430 sqm!) Albatron, VIA and SIS.
In conclusion: Taiwan consumer electronics spread over not less than
three halls, how is that for their recognition that CeBIT is their place
to be, even if one or two others in Europe don't ?
And now for something completely different:
In e-papers 4, 5 and 6 ( still retrievable from the archive on our website)
as well as today, this 69 year old veteran of 43 years writing practice
felt qualified to smite some journalist colleagues in Germany - - a typical
country where people had it too good for too long to realize that it is
economy and entrepreneurship, and nothing else, what nourishes them -
- and I even went so far as to differentiate between "bullshit"
and "unbelievable bullshit" in categorizing their excretions.
That will stop now. And it is not mildness of old age but just sober
judgment that it is a waste of time to beat those who cannot be bettered.
Anyway, it is interesting how such people react to criticism who make
it their daily business to criticize others, and so I maintain:
Criticism is like medicine - - it must taste bitter,
or it will not work !
Next ( last ) e-paper will contain an abridged show guide to CeBIT, so
kindly watch your inbox in order not to miss it !
And here, some previews from our exhibitors:
