CeBIT 2005: Taiwan returning to Hannover greater than ever! |

Dear Reader:
Can one improve on perfection? It seems to depend on one's entrepreneurial spirit. In the deep South of the USA I often heard a popular wisdom: "The world's got two kind 'a folks, them those who got the guts, and them those who ain't never gonna get 'em!" I remember this every time when Taiwan entrepreneur's basic instinct for business seems to outwit all wiseacres' analysis, simply because they know a good thing when they see it. Consequently, Taiwan's appearance at CeBIT 2005 Hannover will be on a grander scale than ever before.
Tally per today: 726 companies, and counting, up from the 2004 total of 702. And 484 of them will shine up shapely on our completely re-designed 11 "Taiwan Pavilions", a new record as well.
The recently released EITO (European Information Technology Observatory) analysis suggests that the worldwide ICT business is steering "out of the tunnel". While some may still fear that a light at the end of a tunnel could be the headlamps of an oncoming train, optimism prevails, though the new phase of growth will certainly not repeat the double digit growth rates of the boom years. But it will open fresh, challenging opportunities, driven by a wave of new technologies and applications which will reinforce growth figures. We are entering a digital world scenario where Europe has an excellent chance of playing a leading role - - and CeBIT Hannover will again be the market place to fight it out.
Starting last year, CeBIT has been completely re-arranged, geared to the changing requirements of ICT users. The show will emphasize professionalism and application orientation and more demonstrate complete ICT solutions, away from mere hardware displays. CeBIT 2005 will concentrate on three main display product categories: "Business Processes," "Communications", and "Digital Equipment and Systems", subdivided into five major vertical market places: "Banking and Finance", "Card Technology", "future parc", "Public Sector Parc", and "Planet Reseller." Furthermore, a new show will be launched: "IT Outsourcing and Consulting ", stressing, well, just what the name implies, and that right in time, as it seems. And all of these vertical markets are further separated into dozens of categories - - please remember that there will be more than 6.200 exhibitors!
This is the first e-paper of a total of 10 during the run-up to CeBIT 2005, where we will describe, step-by-step, what our Taiwan exhibitors plan to show and where they will be located. The broader information is, of course, better available on the organizer's website www.cebit.com . It was recently re-launched, totally restructured and streamlined for better clarity - - and thank God, it was about time. Please don't miss it, a visit is worthwhile.
And now for something completely different:
Of distorted competition!
The sheer size of CeBIT and its permanent adaptations to changing market requirements should remind us that any fairground in the world, however big and gleaming, is but a humble piece of masonry, and that it is only the organizers' know how and his sense of responsibility and business ethics that turns them into market places which give exhibitors a fair return on their investments.
This seems to be widely ignored in a certain country where trade show organizers are mainly lead by the famous philosophy of their early leader:"To be rich is glorious!" Nothing wrong with that in principle, but unfortunately it lead to a trade show scenario, including, but not limited to ICT, where events seem to be born off undigested stomachs. To look at most of them you might wonder what specialized expertise they could possibly render and what impact they could have except diluting the trade show market and misleading the international business community to the point where companies are at a total loss where to exhibit, what to visit - - and whom to trust.
You might ask: Shouldn't we exercise patience and wait for the market to clear up by itself? Is it necessary to flog a horse that, if not yet dead, at this point is already in mortal danger to expire? I believe, it is necessary to beat those who cannot be bettered. Simply, a clearing-up could take many years because Western market forces have no chance in a country where cash besotted local potentates can simply twist the arms of resident foreign investors and advise them to better participate in their meaningless shows, or elseˇK.
So far, and no more. And the above should in no way stop you from visiting this country including the province of Jiangtzu and its beautiful city of Suzhou as a tourist. But for business, better go where the responsibility is and where market forces concentrate of free will and accord. Allow me to create a little ad-hoc slogan:
CeBIT Hannover - - everything else is a compromise!
