Dear Reader:
The percentage of professionals attending
CeBIT is rising, but total visitor figures vary each year
due to end users who only come when new exhilarating gadgets
hit the market. This year, they could be back for those loads
of newly baked mobile communication devices, overstuffed with
so many doodads that they make us forget what a wireless telephone
was only a few years ago.
Gone is the era when consumption was inseparably associated
with style. Today, we contemporaries have the sad privilege
to witness the transition of so many once coveted high technology
products into commodities with mass market odor. At present,
it's the cell phone which is rapidly evolving into a phone
in name only, as dialing a telephone number becomes almost
secondary to a host of other functions: Color screens, e-mail,
multimedia messaging, music downloads, video games, PDA and
PC office functions, GPRS and integrated cameras with picture
editing and transmitting function. And, as CeBIT will show:
UMTS is slowly becoming a reality, adding video calls and
satellite navigation to the list of functions.
2001 and 2002 were years of gloom, when researchers threatened
market saturation, as everybody seemed to have a mobile phone
already. That was reason enough for the telecom network bosses
to issue a stern warning to their suppliers: "Dream up
new technological delicatessen, wrap 'em up nicely and push-market
them with persuasion, or else....!!" The R&D folks
got the broad hint, did their homework, and the marketing
wizards succeeded and continue to succeed in launching the
resulting thingamajigs - whose actual usage will often be
in the single digit percentage range only - as the new status
symbols for the Nobodies. But that's what national economies
need to show growth.
In 2003, worldwide shipments of mobile telephones were 510
million according to Gartner Dataquest, while IDC said it
was 533,4 million. 2004 should be even better. Taiwan's share
in the pie was 10% in 2003, up 47,2 % from the year before.
These figures underline the rising involvement of this island
nation in the mobile communication trade.
The world's big cell phone brands - a handful of names -
maintain a balanced mixture between own production and outsourcing,
where another handful of Asian OEM and ODM colossals stand
by with high-volume production capacities and cheap labor.
That is to say, the big players on both sides are very well
connected, without specific need for public exposure. But
it speaks for the status of CeBIT as the world's major event
that they nevertheless are all there, and on a grand scale.
From Taiwan, it is giants like BenQ, Compal, Arima , Quanta
and Mitac, whose dazzling stands you simply can't overlook.
Some of them also offer own brand mobile phones, i.e. Mitac
which intends to launch no less than ten advanced "SmartPhones"
this year, equipped with Windows 2003 OS.
The Mobile Communication Pavilion
- one of the 11 Taiwan Pavilions presented by the Hannover
Pacific Corporation - is located in Hall 26. More individual
exhibitors are scattered elsewhere over the fairground. Some
operate in fields more loosely related to this subject, such
as push-to-talk transceivers and long-range cordless phones
for building private mobile phone trunked networks in remote
areas. And then, there are 10 exhibitors from Taiwan with
global positioning systems (GPS) devices.
And now for something completely different:
The ancillary events @ CeBIT !
Another feature that sets CeBIT apart from the rest of the
competition is the fair's huge program of supporting events:
The Corporate Lecture Program features 300 highly
specialized sessions, running every day from 09:00 to 18:00
in the congress center. Watch the leaflets with the daily
program, handed out by friendly touts at the fairground's
entrances.
Nearly 250 press conferences by corporations or associations
will address up to 10,000 press people accredited to CeBIT
every year.
The organizer of the ICT WORLD FORUM @ CeBIT 2004
has issued the 2nd, and seemingly final version of his invitation
brochure. It is available in American English as well as in
stilted German. Best, you retrieve these pdf downloads section
from his website www.ictwf.com
. What I found good last year was the event's vertical sessions
through several hierarchy levels: From CEO keynote gibberish
to operational level workshops, breakout sessions, round tables,
networking occasions and panel discussions. Decide for yourself
if you really feel like forking out the money - - I have difficulty
to believe that conference organizers calculate their admission
fees just on a cost-plus basis.
Decidedly not to be missed is a CeBIT classic: The Exhibitors'
Events: That are concise lectures and application-oriented
product demonstrations of varying information value, performed
directly at the stands. Last year, it was 1,111 ! From this
year onward, exhibitors will no longer report their programs
in advance to CeBIT but can to input their event details by
direct access to the CeBIT website. So, call www.cebit.de/47106
on a daily basis. For those who don't have a WLAN laptop,
there is an Internet Cafe in the Information Center (IC).
And finally, a networking opportunity which is a Hannover
Fairs exclusive: the famous Exhibitors Stand Parties!
At CeBIT, when the sun goes down, the elbows go up. Deutsche
Messe AG is the world's single fair organizer that does not
only allow, but actually encourages exhibitors to host nightly
social events at their own stands for cultivating customer
relations! And it has its own catering department to outfit
these parties in style: From double-fisted drinking to Champagne
receptions or Bavarian beer bashes with knockwurst and brass
music - - the parties are as numerous as their imbibbiments.
Brace yourself, or after seven days, you owe your liver an
apology and might be no longer qualified for future organ
donations.
All that is CeBIT for you! And those modern-time loners who
prefer to contact people without the desire to meet them by
doing business and virtual trade shows on the Internet, now
know what they miss: the human touch of trade fairs - - the
reason why all others still go there !
And here, some previews from our exhibitors:
