Dear Reader:
If you are not a computer freak but just
a user, the innards of a PC could be of very limited interest
to you. But then, how about the computer cases that wraps
them up?
Insiders know that there is more to it than meets the eye.
Requirements to be met are getting tougher from year to year.
As processors run faster and devices get smaller, they generate
an enormous heat, demanding cases designed to more effectively
dissipate it. As the number of components increase, cheap
metallic cases can actually amplify the noise of all those
spinning and whirring plug-ins, so new materials had to be
developed to muffle them. National regulations require suppression
of EMI. System integrators and end users want computer cases
designed for toolfree assembly, with side handles for maintenance
or installing drives, or with see-through transparent side
panels. The trend to thinner and lighter notebook computers
dictate to substitute ABS material with magnesium alloy, which
is not only lighter and stronger but also superior in heat
dissipation. And then, there are the end users, who call for
a myriad of glitzy styling varieties, to match PC equipment
to their interior decoration.
All of this is a typical domain of Taiwan ingenuity, and
so it is no wonder that this country since 1998 is far and
by the world's biggest supplier of computer cases. It will
show again at this year's CeBIT, where case manufacturers
occupy nearly half of the TAIWAN PAVILIONS in Halls 19 &
22, plus several individual exhibitors. Big in appearance
will be Hon Hai Precision, Enermax, JNC, In Win, Linkworld,
Thermaltake, King Case and Lin Chi, just to drop a few names.
Six years of increasing cooperation with Mainland China about
outsourcing raw materials and farming out operations keep
prices competitive. Typically, Taiwan manufacturers are flexible
in taking orders; cross-matching all design options makes
for a variety of many hundred types.
As CeBIT is relaxing previous strict rules regarding entertainment
electronics, you will see Taiwan makers of lifestyle entertainment
electronics like LCD TVs, AV speakers, home theater systems,
and PC entertainment accessory cards . These Taiwan makers
are scattered over Halls 1, 19, 21, 22 and 23. Please bring
earplugs, Hall 23 will be the noisiest ! For loners with small
living space or nervous landlords there are compact home theater
systems, where bulky loudspeaker arrays make way for sophisticated
headphones containing eight (!) speakers, 2 for front, 2 for
rear, 2 for center and 2 for subwoofing.

an agenda to make the best use of your time?
