Dear Reader:
I am tempted to write this 6th e-paper in
rainbow-colored characters, because Taiwan's monitor industry
is beaming with joy and optimism for a bright, flat business
in 2004 and beyond.
After years of hard work, starting with mere
assembly, the industry is now self-sufficient, upstream and
downstream, with high value-added. Flat panel monitors have
attained another supremacy status after Taiwan's notebook
success story. This counts for the semiconductor companies
making the basic display panels as well as for the finished
goods manufacturers.
No details here. If your interest in the
subject is above average, please go to our home page's "Headline
News" and click "Monitors from Taiwan - - the never
ending success story". And should your interest be supernatural,
you may still want to read a survey of Asia's flat panel industries
that we published during the run-up to CeBIT 2003. The link
is www.taiwan-technology.com/edit/p/news/2003/030128-1.htm
Even one year old, this compact yet comprehensive analysis
has not lost its relevance to the current situation.
At CeBIT Hall 21, you just can't avoid the
world's household names of the monitor trade, like LG, Samsung,
Philips, together with Taiwan's finest such as TECO, AG Neovo,
Soaring, Top Powersonic, TVS. Furthermore, one of the world's
most important provider of TFT-LCD panels, Chi Mei, exhibits
at CeBIT for the first time !
Another success story seems to be in the
making: TFT-LCD TV sets, where Taiwan is expected to export
around 1 million sets this year, with TECO alone accounting
for 500,000. Diagonal sizes are 17-23-32 and 40 inches, with
rear projection units as big as 51 inches. Despite all consumer
trepidation in other fields, these incredibly expensive home
cinema TVs enjoy brisk sales and threaten to become a trend,
wiping out the top shelf brands of CRT-based home entertainment
systems.
Hall 21 as well as adjoining Hall 20 also
host Taiwan makers in the field of projectors, commonly know
as "beamers", either of LCD (liquid crystal display)
or LOCOS (liquid crystal on silicone ) technology, and external
storage devices.
And now for something completely different:
The ICT World Forum @ CeBIT 2004!
My frequent readers know that I am not necessarily
a fan of conventional conventions. It's too easy these days
for all kinds of would-be organizers to simply round up a
bunch of publicity-seeking CEOs and other bigwigs tooting
their own horns, for events catering to the seemingly perennial
pack of pusillanimous promotion-restricted mid-level managers,
eager to boost their self-esteem by seeking the warmth of
the herd, looking up to their corporate idols rubbing shoulders
with those who have arrived - - and paying through their nose
for such opportunities !
I am victim of some of those, including the
WCIT2000 in Taipei, where the organizer implied that we would
meet and exchange all views under the sun with the top brass
of the world's largest IT concerns. And, yes, a dozen of them
were there, from the august Bill Gates to the even more august
Lester Thurow, kept at bay from us flatulences by a huge stage.
But thanks to those big screens, they looked larger than life
( except their brains ). Each of them had, by the stopwatch,
35 minutes of keynote speech, which I wouldn't say were platitudes,
but just the obvious. After a short encounter with the press
corps and photo opportunities with local dignitaries, off
they were on their corporate jets. So, we duped junketeer
extras faced ourselves only during "networking"
social events, exchanging our own views including of what
congresses like these are actually worth at the end of the
day.
Thus being a burnt child, you may now want
to believe me when I warily recommend to attend an event that
seems to be above average - - the ICT WORLD FORUM @ CeBIT
2004, sequel of its 2003 inaugural event, this year entitled
"Where Technology Does Business",
The organizer obviously tries to avoid the
shortcomings of others by making his really impressive line
of now 26 top-level speakers actually available to the audiences
during sessions and social functions. It worked already quite
well last year. Executive producer Alexander Glos appears
practical enough to have learned from that "dress rehearsal"
and will even do one better this time - - there is always
room for improvements. To remember: "Atmosphere"
is the thing when offering a congress; the lectures as such
are more efficiently (and cheaper) read on paper.
The ICTWF has a home page, but I recommend
to first go to the introductory brochure: www.ictwf.com/0a04/files/ictwf_EnglishBrochure200401.pdf
The three day congress starts one day ahead
of CeBIT, and the expected spillover of attendants to our
fairground will surely push CeBIT visitor statistics further
to the professional side.
My next e-paper will deal with digital photography
from Taiwan.
And here, some previews from our exhibitors:
