Networking and Data Communication

Taiwan is well prepared to face the challenge of CeBIT

Dear Reader,

In accordance with the development of advanced communication, influencing how we will ( or are supposed to ) live tomorrow, future CeBIT shows will not be what they were before. That will already be noticeable this year:

The emphasis of CeBIT 2004 will shift away from merely showing ICT products and technologies towards solutions and applications. To an even greater extent than in the past, we will focus on the hot topic of networking. CeBIT 2004 will appeal to a broad target audience - global players, small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups, as well as private users. The CeBIT organizers will offer more contact opportunities for "networkers" than any other competing event.

Technically speaking, networking is based on the abilities of data communication, so this e-paper describes the Taiwan line-up of both disciplines:

In Halls No. 14, 15 and 16 a total of 120 companies ( 105 networking related, 15 UPS providers ) will show up, 60 of them on our ubiquitous "Taiwan Pavilion" in Hall 15. Concentration in the business has led to an eight percent decline over 2003. Just to name a few prominent companies : Adlink, CNET, Draytek, Eten, Handlink, Jaht, Well Communication, and Zyxel, among others. The big players in UPS are AC Power, Centralion, Entrust, and Main Power.

Hall No.13 is the venue for Taiwan's presentation of WLAN technology, including modems, xDSL, ISDN, and Video/Text communication. Insiders might well know exhibitors such as Amigo, Antek, Yoda, Universal Microelectronics, Welltech, Lectron and Senao.

Tendencies in brief

Taiwan's business press during the last months was booming with optimism: "Taiwan WLAN manufacturers win Korean contracts", "WLAN equipment market to grow by 82,5%", "Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) sets up WLAN R&D alliance" (i.e. to create a new generation of products and to develop key technologies for system-on-a-chip (SoC) devices, plus a host of product news releases.

Apart from office communication, Taiwan industrial bigwigs expect an explosive growth among home users, envisioning that the networking industry is transitioning from a PC-centered era into an age of wireless home networking, linking together the various home electronic devices such as DVD players, set-top boxes, game consoles, video cameras etc. by various WLAN technologies rather than messy wire assemblies.

So, once more industries, under the draconian curse to maintain growth, must resort to "creative persuasion" by force-feeding us with enticing knick-knacks for previously non-existent market demands. By the way, may I take this opportunity to raise a question of competence? Who deserve the major merits in creating new markets - - the industries' R&D and marketing wizards, or a world event like CeBIT in presenting them on a grand scale, appetizing enough to separate people from their money?

Stories in detail will be topics of our Online publication "TAIWAN TECHNOLOGY" co

And now for something not so completely different:

"Networking" will also be high up on the ancillary of CeBIT, i.e. the congress and lecture program. The line-up includes the "ICT World Forum @ CeBIT 2004", a number of other big events still under development (watch the CeBIT website in February ) and, in addition, over 300 practice-oriented company seminars, hosted by individual CeBIT exhibitors, a seven full schedule of overlapping press conference, and, not to forget, the famous after-show evening stand parties, the very casual way of "networking" Hannover fairs are so famous for.

Mighty are our preparations to keep you busy from morning to night at CeBIT 2004 ! So, honor them by contemplating to swing by !

Yours truly,

Dieter Neumann
