Dear Reader,
Come CeBIT time, every year critics accuse me of using the term
"unprecedented" much too often. They are probably right,
but what can one do when you have to announce the annual Taiwan
attendance, and every time the number of exhibitors exceed what
was already a record in preceding years, to wit: - 507 in 2000 (
the year of boom ) - 592 in 2002 ( the year of gloom ) - 664 in
2003 ( the year of trepidation ) - and now, 703 exhibitors targeted
for 2004, - - again a numeral unprecedented and most unexpected.
According to present registrations, CeBIT 2004 will occupy well
over 300,000 square meters of indoor exhibition space of which Taiwan
will inhabit 20,124 sqm. Taiwan's total exhibitors will cover space
in 17 halls of the Hannover fair ground, while 504 companies will
present themselves on the now well known theme-oriented "Taiwan
Pavilions", spread over 11 Hall areas.
Admittedly, statisticians are like bakers; they knead the dough
as they want the loaf to be shaped, but when analyzing ICT production
capacities broken down to continents and territories, than it seems
that while low-labor cost Asian countries are the place to manufacture
the bulk of the world's ICT product demands, the most sensible place
to sell them is the world's most expensive country, Germany,
where an incredibly provincial hamlet called "Hannover"
grew to this globe's biggest and most important show ground for
them.
So, it must be Taiwan's basic instinct for business to shine up
in Hannover in margins that outnumber all other trading places.
This basic instinct also seems to have lead to this time's renewed
increase as a token that a three year period of gloom and doom has
reached a plausible ending: The last culprits of the new economy
bubble burst have disappeared from sight, either into oblivion or
into cells. Private purchase resistance and the industrial investment
restraints of the last three years are now rewarded by the need
to replace outdated equipment by new products of the Post-PC area,
developed in the meantime.
While the 13% ICT growth rate of 2000 will remain a pipe dream
of the past, the recession and SARS infected growth rates of 2,8%
in 2001 and 1% of 2002 are also forgotten. The European Information
Technology Observatory (EITO) computed this years growth rate at
5,5% and forecasts 6% for 2004.
That's all on figures for today. To facilitate your visit scheduling,
we will describe the Taiwan Pavilion's location and their highlight
their technology categorizations hall-by-hall and product group-by-product
group in a sequence of e-papers to follow until
March 8.
Also unprecedented at CeBIT 2004 will also be the number of social
events. Again, watch out for details in later e-papers. Just to
mention that the successful ICT WORLD FORUM@ CeBIT, inaugurated
this year, will go into its second round. Quite a number of VIP
figures from the world's most renowned ICT concerns have already
signed to toot their horns, either as keynote high-flyers or workshop
yarn spinners. Reason enough to expect the floor level to fork out
a sizeable admission fee for opportunities to look up to or rub
shoulders with their idols and peers. We are all still tribesmen
at heart, seeking the warmth of the herd, and that seems to keep
the junket business alive even in these times.
And now for something completely different:
You receive our e-papers as HTML configured mails, popping up readily
upon clicking the subject line. However, it seems that some ISPs
or company servers filter out HTML tags from incoming e-mails, depriving
you of pictures and leaving you with nothing by my rhetoric. Would
you kindly take a minute to report by return mail how you receive
our newsletter in your respective countries, and if we should switch
to .pdf or other attachments for better clarity? Thank you for your
advice!
And here, some previews from our exhibitors:
