Dear Reader:
Taiwan is fighting it out for the number one spot in this major
high tech industry that is poised for extremely rapid growth,
and CeBIT Hannover is the place where it will show.
With CRTs a technology of the past and with potential applications
for almost every professional and consumer IT product sold today,
flat panel displays are expected to become a standard feature
of products such as cameras, PDAs, and mobile phones. Large size
applications, notably for notebook and desktop PC monitors, already
enjoy a staggering popularity, while a global flat home TV market
may not be in the house yet, but already around the corner.
Taiwan and South Korea, the two nations best positioned to supply
the world market with flat screens, currently account for roughly
70% of the global market, with China for less than 1% of market
revenue only, and Japan brands having to rely on offshore production
for cost reasons.
This 6th e-paper preceding the annual CeBIT marathon is to raise
your awareness for our Taiwan stands in Halls 20 and 21 with monitors,
LCD projectors and external storage items, all members of the
optoelectronic field.
There will be no less than 21 monitor exhibitors from Taiwan,
dominated by leading brands like SAMPO, MAG, Neovo, Proview, Pro
Arch, Soaring and TVS. For the technically related PDP (Plasma
Display Panels) technology please keep your eyes peeled for Nexgen
and Sampo.
Then there will be LCD projectors, whose images by now are nearly
as bright and clear as those of twenty times cheaper color slide
projectors, but of course more versatile and indispensable for
today's computer aided presentation razzle-dazzle. The end user
market is clearly dominated by the familiar brands out of Japan,
but Taiwan is gaining shape as an OEM supplier. Watch out for
Epoque and Premier Image Technology, who, as the world's biggest
camera maker, will surely not rest until his projectors will be
a household name too, and quite soon.
External storage devices, such as recordable DVDs, optical drives
and optical storage discs are also products of the optoelectronic
family. Watch out for the transition from 48x to 52x CD-R-drives,
and for Taiwan makers in this field like Ritek, CMC, Prodisc and
Infodisc.
And now for something completely different:
As mentioned earlier, my infrequent e-papers are just short form
reminders for "Taiwan-Technology", our search engine
and information service for ICT.
Kindly switch to our headline news section where you can - among
other stories - benefit from a very comprehensive analysis of
the Asian flat panel display market. I believe that this 10 page
story of exactly 4.343 words is important enough for you as a
buyer to judge developments and direction of this booming sector
- - it may just be a bit long for on-screen reading.
My suggestion: Print it out on a Friday and take it into the
weekend for some fascinating pool-side reading about which country
will dominate ( if not corner ! ) the flat panel market of the
future - - then travel to CeBIT and watch them fight it out in
the marketplace - - there ain't no business like show business!
See you all in Hannover, and while there, please swing by at the
service counter of any Taiwan Pavilion and ask for me if you have
comments or suggestions how to possibly improve our publication
for your needs.
Yours truly,
Dieter Neumann
